Wall scouting was al een trend op Instagram, dit is simpel gezegd het vinden van mooie, artsy muren om voor te poseren. Maar, Michelle Satterlee heeft dit een grote upgrade gegeven. De outfits die te zien zijn op haar Instagram account, @dresstomatch, zijn visuele replica’s van beroemde schilderwerken.
De eerste keer dat Michelle kleding liet matchen met een kunstwerk was in 2013 en ging eigenlijk per ongeluk. Ze kocht op het laatste moment nog snel en jurk, en deze bleek toen precies te matchen met de kunst in de galerij waar ze heen ging. “I can't tell you how many people were obsessed with the idea that I somehow had coincidentally matched this piece," she says. "It was a really fun talking point,” vertelde ze.
Michelle ging hiermee door en in 2015 maakte ze haar Instagram account aan. Het werd razendsnel populair en ze heeft nu wel meer dan 16.200 volgers. Onder #dresstomatch plaatsen fans dan ook soortgelijke foto’s, en dit zijn er al zo’n 2.000.
"Everyone loves things that match or inherently blend into one another, it's very pleasing on the eye. I think that's what people are attracted to. It brings a different level of attention to the art itself. I think it brings art off the wall. It makes it conversational and less intimidating. For me, it's a passion project that allows me to be creative," vertelde Michelle verder. "I don’t paint, but I have a degree in art history, and I know so much about art. I have a huge appreciation for it, so this is kind of like my method of making art."
Michelle heeft altijd een lijstje met potentiële matchende outfits en kunstwerken in haar hoofd, om haar collectie up-to-date te houden. "As I'm browsing, certain things will pop up to me that are reminiscent of specific pieces that I want to match. That’s how I'm able to juggle and not just focus on one thing."
